Frameless Glass Balustrades
Frameless glass balustrades provide a modern, minimalist safety barrier that offers unobstructed views. Rather than relying on posts and clamps, the glass panels themselves are engineered for strength and are anchored to the ground or a base channel.
Installation options and components
Frameless glass balustrades can be installed using different anchoring methods, which affect the system's appearance and the installation process.
- U-channel base: The most common method involves securing thick glass panels (12mm–21.5mm) into a continuous aluminum U-channel at the bottom. The channel can be surface-mounted on the floor or recessed for a completely flush, "invisible" effect. Installation often uses rubber gaskets and clamping strips, and some systems like Q-railing's allow for fine-tuning the glass alignment from one side.
- Spigots: This system uses stainless steel clamps, called spigots, that are bolted directly into the deck or concrete. The glass is held between two spigots per panel, lifting the glass slightly off the ground for drainage.
- Point-fixed systems: For certain applications, balustrades can be secured using a series of glass-mounted disks or bolts that are fixed to the side of the structure.
Safety and regulations
Frameless glass balustrades are robust and meet strict safety standards when correctly installed.
- Glass type: To be used without a continuous handrail, the balustrade must be made from laminated, toughened glass. This is composed of two panes of glass bonded by a safety interlayer, so if one pane breaks, the other remains in place, preventing a fall.
- Height: Building regulations dictate minimum height requirements. In the UK, this is typically 900mm for internal balustrades and 1100mm for external applications.
- Gap size: Any gap between glass panels must be small enough to prevent a 100mm sphere from passing through, a regulation primarily aimed at protecting small children.
- Structural strength: All components must adhere to load-bearing standards, such as British Standard BS 6180, which specifies the required strength against horizontal forces.
