Windows in the Lakes was appointed to supply and install a full aluminium glazing package as part of the conversion of an old Cumbrian farm building near Brampton, Cumbria. The project required a careful balance between modern architectural glazing and the character of a traditional rural structure.
The brief focused on maximising natural light, maintaining clean architectural lines, and ensuring the glazing complemented both the historic farmhouse and its surrounding landscape.

Design intent – black outside, white inside
The decision to specify black aluminium externally with white finishes internally was central to the success of this project. Externally, the black frames provide a bold, contemporary contrast against the brickwork and slate roof, enhancing the architectural definition of the converted barn while remaining sympathetic to its rural setting.
Internally, the white finish softens the appearance of the aluminium and integrates seamlessly with the light, neutral interior palette. This approach allows the glazing to frame views of the surrounding countryside without dominating the internal spaces.
Slimline Aluminium sliding door
The AS-20 slimline aluminium sliding door forms the focal point of the rear elevation. Measuring 5600mm wide by 2100mm high, the three-pane configuration allows all panels to slide, offering maximum flexibility and usability.
Slim sightlines ensure uninterrupted views across open farmland, while the large glazed panels flood the interior with natural daylight. Despite its scale, the system operates smoothly and reliably, making it ideal for everyday use.
AW47 Aluminium Windows
Six AW47 aluminium windows were installed throughout the conversion to provide consistency of design and performance. The system was selected for its excellent thermal efficiency, slim profiles, and suitability for both contemporary and traditional architecture.
The windows enhance natural light levels while maintaining strong visual alignment with the sliding door system. Their black external finish ensures cohesion across all elevations, while the white internal finish contributes to a bright and welcoming interior. -edge spacer bars. Safety glass was used throughout, and all frames sit neatly within the original stone surrounds.
Our steel look doors replicate the proportions and style of traditional metal doors while offering shorter lead times, greater energy efficiency, and a more cost-effective solution. Doors are glazed with toughened safety glass, having a soft-coat low-emissivity coating, warm edge spacer bars and argon gas fill.
Project challenges – rural access
The rural location presented access challenges typical of farm conversions. Restricted access and limited working space required careful planning for deliveries and installation.
Windows in the Lakes coordinated closely with the wider build team to ensure smooth scheduling and minimal disruption. Accurate surveying was critical due to the irregular nature of the original structure, with each opening measured and checked in detail prior to manufacture.
Survey and Installation
A full professional survey was carried out to ensure absolute accuracy. Installation was completed by experienced local installers with specialist knowledge of aluminium systems.
Attention was paid to structural interfaces, weather tightness, and clean internal and external detailing. The result is a precise, high-quality installation that will perform reliably for years to come.
