Do I Need Fire Rated Internal Steel Doors?
A fire rating is decided by where the door sits, not by what it is made of. Here is how to work out which of your openings need one, and who signs it off.

The reason fire doors have a reputation for spoiling interiors is sequencing. They are usually chosen last, from whatever is in stock, and dropped into a scheme that was designed without them.
Treated as part of the design — same collection, same finish, same bar layout — the rated openings simply disappear into the rest of the house.
Making a rated door look like the others
- Specify the rated and unrated doors from one collection so profiles and finishes match.
- Repeat the bar layout across both, even where certification would allow a larger pane.
- Use the same lever or pull handle family, in the same finish.
- Choose a concealed closer in the head rather than a surface-mounted overhead arm.
- Keep the frame reveal detail consistent — a flush plaster reveal on one and an architrave on the next is what gives it away.
Where they usually land in a modern plan
In most contemporary houses the rated openings are utilitarian: garage, utility, plant room, stair landing. The doors people actually look at — the pair into the living space, the pivot into the study — are usually unrated. That is a helpful pattern, because it means the design-led configurations stay available exactly where they matter.
