Architecturally, Appleby is unusually intact. Boroughgate running between the castle and the church is one of the finest streets of its kind in the North, and much of the historic town is designated. Beyond the centre there are Victorian villas, twentieth-century housing on the town's edges, and Eden Valley farmsteads in the surrounding parishes at Dufton, Long Marton, Murton and Warcop.

Appleby property character
The town's core is red sandstone with strong vertical proportions and a high proportion of listed and conservation-area buildings. Sash windows and multi-pane casements dominate the historic frontages. Away from the centre, the stock is more varied: interwar and post-war detached housing, small modern developments and, in the surrounding countryside, working farmhouses and converted agricultural ranges.

A significant part of central Appleby is within a conservation area, and many buildings on and around Boroughgate are listed. In practical terms that means the glazing conversation usually starts with what is already there — opening pattern, sash horns, glazing bar arrangement, sightline width and finish — rather than with a product range.
