Cumbria is not a region we travel to. It is where we are based, where most of our surveys happen, and where the majority of our installations are completed.
Windows in the Lakes works from Appleby-in-Westmorland, in the Eden Valley, and Cumbria is our everyday territory rather than an occasional destination. In a normal week that means a survey somewhere between Penrith and Kendal, an installation towards Carlisle or the west coast, and drawings arriving from an architect working on a farmhouse or a self-build somewhere in between.
The county is more varied than its reputation suggests. Red sandstone in the north around Carlisle, limestone and slate in the south around Kendal and Ulverston, gritstone and rendered farmsteads through the Eden Valley, and remote high-ground properties at Alston and Kirkby Stephen where exposure genuinely changes the specification. A window package that works on a sheltered Penrith townhouse can be the wrong answer two valleys away.

The county in outline
Cumbria covers everything from Solway coast villages to Pennine market towns, and the building stock shifts with the geology. Understanding which part of the county a property sits in usually tells you more about the right glazing answer than the property's age does.

Because Cumbria is our home ground, we take on a wider range of project sizes here than we would three hours away. That said, our work is still built around considered whole-elevation projects rather than single replacements.

Why exposure matters more here
Cumbria contains some of the wettest and windiest inhabited ground in England, and two identical-looking windows can have very different service lives depending on where they are fitted. Exposure drives the powder coat specification, the drainage capacity of the frame, the hardware grade and often the threshold detail.
Planning across the county
Cumbria's planning is administered by Westmorland and Furness Council and Cumberland Council, with the Lake District National Park Authority and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority determining applications within their own boundaries. Conservation areas are common in the market towns, and listed buildings are widely distributed across rural Cumbria — considerably more so than most owners expect.
