Kirkby Stephen sits at the head of the Eden Valley where the Pennines close in, twenty minutes from our base. It is a stone market town with a broad main street, surrounded by some of the most exposed inhabited ground in England — Mallerstang, Nateby, Ravenstonedale, Outhgill and the farms running up towards Wild Boar Fell.
This is the part of Cumbria where exposure stops being a technical footnote and becomes the whole conversation. Wind loading, driving rain, drainage capacity and hardware grade genuinely determine whether a window performs for twenty-five years or complains within five. We have completed full aluminium window packages on properties near Kirkby Stephen, and the lodges at Ravenstonedale, so this is ground we know rather than describe.
A further complication: part of the area east and south of the town falls within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, whose boundary was extended westwards in 2016 to include land many owners still assume is unrestricted Cumbria.

Thick-walled stone construction predominates, with modest original openings, deep reveals and heavy stone surrounds. Many of the farmhouses have been extended at various points, producing elevations with mismatched window styles that a whole-house project can finally resolve. Barn conversions are common, as are contemporary rural builds that take advantage of the fell views.

Specifying for genuine exposure
On upland Eden sites we treat wind and water as the primary design loads rather than an afterthought. That affects the frame system, the number and position of drainage paths, the hardware, the fixing method and — on the largest openings — whether a sliding door is a better answer than a bifold.

Planning around Kirkby Stephen
The town is administered by Westmorland and Furness Council and has a conservation area covering the historic core. Land to the east and south — including parts of Mallerstang and the area towards Ravenstonedale — was brought inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park in the 2016 extension, meaning the Park Authority determines applications there. That catches owners out regularly.
