Who installs windows around Ambleside?
Windows in the Lakes supplies and installs timber-look, aluminium and aluclad windows and doors across Ambleside, Rydal and Langdale. Most homes here are traditional Lakeland stone and slate inside the National Park, so the brief is usually a better-performing window that still looks right on the elevation, with larger contemporary glazing reserved for rear or garden sides. Ambleside is built almost entirely from local slate — a grey-green stone with a cooler, harder character than the sandstone of the Eden Valley or the limestone of Kendal. It suits dark frames, deep greens and soft greys, and it tends to make bright whites look conspicuous rather than smart.
The town is a dense historic settlement with conservation coverage over much of its centre and a significant number of listed buildings, and the valleys behind it — Rydal, Grasmere's approaches, Great and Little Langdale — are among the most sensitive landscape settings in the National Park. The building stock there is largely traditional Lakeland farmhouses, cottages and converted barns, plus a handful of substantial houses with exceptional valley outlooks.
Langdale in particular is properly exposed. It looks sheltered on a map; in practice the valley funnels weather and the specification needs to reflect that.

Slate walls, slate roofs, small original openings and deep reveals define the traditional stock. Window proportions are generally modest and vertically arranged, with multi-pane casements more common historically than sashes. Later houses on the town's edges and a small number of contemporary valley properties allow much more freedom.

Frame colour against Lakeland slate
Slate is cool and tonally complex, and it flatters colours drawn from the landscape rather than against it. Deep greens, heritage greys, soft blacks and muted off-whites sit well; bright white and strongly warm tones tend to draw the eye for the wrong reasons. In a designated setting this is not only an aesthetic question — colour is one of the things assessed.

Everything here is inside the Lake District National Park, and the Park Authority determines applications. Ambleside's centre includes a conservation area and numerous listed buildings, and the Rydal and Langdale valleys sit in landscape settings where the Authority weighs visual impact heavily. Traditional appearance, modest opening changes and recessive colour are generally received more comfortably than large-scale contemporary interventions.
