The story
A distinctive installation of aluminium windows in Cumbria, complemented with matching Heritage-style doors. Set in a small village near Kirkby Stephen, this traditional stone property now benefits from the authentic steel-look design of the Alitherm Heritage system in a contemporary RAL 7016 Grey finish.
Working within the original structure and newly built openings, the windows are set into old and new stone surrounds and seamlessly integrate with the building — modern aluminium glazing with the timeless styling of period metal windows.
Black is one of the most popular colours for this style of home. Our customer chose RAL 7016 Grey to provide a bold contrast against the natural Cumbrian stone, and the result of grey against cream looks outstanding. Openings are staggered across multiple levels, adding visual interest and depth to the stone façade, while a tall fixed picture window in the stairwell brings light into the heart of the property.
Each unit is glazed with 28mm insulated glass units incorporating a soft-coat low-emissivity coating, argon gas fill and warm-edge spacer bars. Safety glass was used throughout, and first-floor side-hung windows carry fire-escape hinges.
At the front of the property an imposing entrance screen combines a single Alitherm Heritage door with matching side panels and a steel-look toplight, mullions and transoms running consistently through the horizontals to divide the screen into twelve modules. Every detail is colour-matched in RAL 7016 Grey, including handles and hinges.
Challenge
All windows had to be fitted directly into original stonework and traditional stone cills, with uneven surfaces throughout and both original and newly built openings to reconcile. Conservation-appropriate detailing was required without additional aluminium cills.
Solution
Face-drained systems were specified so the frames could sit directly within the stone surrounds and retain the original cills. Our survey team coordinated closely with the supplier on delivery, and installers worked to fine tolerances — even the perimeter mastic seal was applied by hand to follow the irregular stone.
