Short answer
In short: colour is the strongest unifier, sightline weight is the second, and glazing pattern is the third. Record all three plus the hardware and glass at the start, and any later phase can match rather than approximate.
The specification record to keep
- System
- Exact system name and profile range
- Colour
- RAL reference, finish type and whether inside and outside differ
- Glass
- Unit make-up, coatings, spacer colour and any obscure levels
- Hardware
- Handle model and finish, hinge type
- Glazing bars
- Type, width and pattern, if used
- Installer and date
- So the specification can be traced later
Where mismatch creeps in
- The same RAL number rendered differently by a different material or coating process.
- A revised profile from the same manufacturer a few years later.
- Different spacer bar colours inside the glass units, which is surprisingly visible.
- Handles from a different range because the original was discontinued.
- One elevation with trickle vents and another without.
- Weathering — an older phase that has faded slightly next to new work.
If the house is already mismatched
Work elevation by elevation rather than room by room. Making a single elevation consistent achieves more visually than replacing scattered windows across the house, and it gives a natural break point for the next phase.
