Sliding doors span a wide price range because they cover everything from a straightforward two-panel door on a modest extension to a vast slim-frame architectural system opening an entire rear elevation onto a garden or view. Understanding where your project sits on that spectrum early makes for a much more useful conversation with a surveyor.
As a guide, a 2-panel slider around 3m wide runs £6,000–£11,000, a larger 3-panel slider of 4-5m runs £11,000–£20,000, and slim-frame architectural sliders start from around £18,000, often reaching £40,000 or more on larger or more technically demanding openings.

The jump between a standard slider and a slim-frame architectural system is not just about size. Slim-frame systems use a fundamentally different engineering approach, with narrower sightlines, larger single panes and heavier-duty running gear, all of which cost more to design, manufacture and install than a standard system scaled up.
What drives the price within each tier
- Overall width and height, and therefore glass area and structural loading
- Number of panels and the running configuration, such as how many panels stack together
- Glass specification, particularly if solar control or acoustic glass is needed on a large expanse
- Threshold detail, especially a level or near-level threshold for step-free access
- Colour and hardware finish, including pull bar style
- Structural opening works, if the existing wall needs widening or a new lintel or beam
Sliding doors versus bifolds on cost
Bifold doors sit in a broadly comparable range to standard sliders at similar widths, with a 3-panel 3m bifold running £7,000–£12,000 and a 4-5m bifold running £10,000–£18,000. Sliding doors tend to offer larger uninterrupted panes of glass for the same opening width, since bifold panels are narrower by design, while bifolds fold flush against the wall for a fully open aperture that a slider cannot quite match.
Budgeting for a sliding door project
Because sliding doors are frequently specified alongside structural building work, such as an extension or a knocked-through opening, it is worth budgeting the door itself separately from the building works around it. A survey should clarify exactly where the door specification ends and the building contractor's structural opening work begins, so nothing falls into a gap between the two trades.
