Heritage aluminium is a specific category within aluminium glazing, built to replicate the slender steel-framed windows found in Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian buildings while using modern thermally broken aluminium underneath. It is a common specification in conservation areas across Cumbria and the Lake District, where a standard chunky aluminium casement would look out of place next to stone mullions or a listed façade.
Because it sits at the intersection of two things people budget separately, heritage detailing and aluminium performance, it is often the specification that surprises homeowners most at quotation stage. This guide explains where the extra cost over standard aluminium comes from, and when it is worth paying for.
What actually makes an aluminium window 'heritage'
Heritage aluminium systems are built around narrower sightlines than standard aluminium, often replicating the slim horizontal and vertical bars of an original steel casement, along with detailing such as a slim central meeting stile, mechanically jointed corners rather than welded ones on some ranges, and bespoke astragal bar patterns to match a historic glazing pattern.

The premium over standard aluminium is usually driven by three things: the additional bar and astragal detailing, the more specialised hardware, and lower production volumes for the narrower profile compared with mainstream aluminium systems.
Conservation areas and listed buildings
The largest single driver of cost on a heritage aluminium project is often not the frame at all, but the design and consultation process required in a conservation area or on a listed building. Conservation officers frequently specify exact bar widths, sightline dimensions and colours, which restricts the systems available and can push the specification toward the more expensive end of the heritage aluminium range.
Glazing bars and glass
Applied glazing bars (sitting on the surface of a single sealed unit) are less expensive than true divided lite construction, where the unit is genuinely split into separate panes. True divided lites look more authentic from close up but cost meaningfully more and offer a slightly reduced thermal performance because of the extra spacer bars, so most heritage aluminium projects specify applied bars as the sensible middle ground.
When heritage aluminium is worth the premium
- The property is listed, in a conservation area, or planning conditions require a heritage profile
- Neighbouring or original windows have visible glazing bars that a plain aluminium casement would clash with
- You want the performance and longevity of aluminium but the proportions of a period steel window
- The elevation is prominent from the street and sightline authenticity genuinely matters to the result
Where it is usually not worth the premium is on rear or secondary elevations not visible from public view and not covered by planning conditions, where a standard aluminium casement will perform identically for less outlay.
Common mistakes
- Specifying heritage aluminium on every elevation when only the street-facing side is subject to planning scrutiny
- Choosing true divided lites without understanding the extra cost and thermal trade-off versus applied bars
- Not confirming the exact bar pattern and sightline dimension with a conservation officer before ordering
- Assuming heritage aluminium and the Residence Collection (timber-look uPVC) are interchangeable; they solve similar problems at different price points and with different materials

A live self-build programme with 36 openings across four elevations, all in newly dressed stone, several of them non-standard shapes — triangular gables and a full-height narrow light — with no tolerance for cumulative setting-out error across the elevation.
Early involvement with the builder to agree structural opening sizes, then a full measured survey of every opening after the stonework was complete and before manufacture. Georgian bar layouts were drawn as a set rather than window by window, so bar spacing aligns horizontally across each elevation, and the non-standard gable and side-light units were manufactured to survey.
