Bifold doors remain one of the most requested features on extensions and garden rooms across Cumbria, folding fully back to open a room onto a terrace or garden in a way no other door type quite matches. They are also one of the more variably priced items in glazing, because the cost depends heavily on panel count, width, and the direction the doors stack, in a way that a simple 'per metre' figure does not capture well.
This guide sets out realistic pricing by size and configuration, alongside what genuinely moves the number so you can budget an extension or garden project with confidence before a survey.

These figures assume standard double glazing, a mid-range colour, and straightforward ground-floor access. Triple glazing, bespoke colours, low threshold options and difficult access all move the number, usually upward.
What drives bifold door pricing
- Overall width and panel count: more panels means more hinges, running gear and hardware
- Panel size: fewer, wider panels per metre generally cost more per panel than several narrower ones, due to glass weight
- Track configuration: an inline track is simpler than a corner post or a track that turns a corner
- Threshold: a low or flush threshold for step-free access costs more than a standard raised threshold
- Glazing specification: solar control, acoustic or triple glazing all add a per-panel premium
- Colour and hardware finish: standard colours and hardware are more economical than bespoke RAL shades or upgraded handles
Bifold versus sliding doors on cost
Bifolds and sliding doors are priced on different bases because they use different hardware and glass configurations. As a rule, bifolds are competitive at moderate widths (3-5m) with several panels, while sliding doors tend to offer better value once the opening gets very wide and can be served by two or three very large panes rather than many folding panels. Installation and structural considerations
Bifold doors are a heavier, more complex assembly than a standard window, and widening an existing wall opening to fit one typically requires a new structural lintel and building control sign-off. On a stone Cumbrian property, forming a new opening in a solid wall for a bifold is a more significant undertaking than in a modern cavity wall, and this structural element should be budgeted separately from the door itself.
Deciding on configuration
- For openings up to around 4m, a straightforward inline bifold with 3-4 panels is usually the most cost-effective configuration
- For very wide openings, compare bifold panel cost against a large sliding door before committing
- Specify a low threshold from the outset if step-free access matters; retrofitting it later is not practical
- Keep colour and hardware standard unless matching an existing scheme, to control cost across a whole project

A rear extension on a terrace risks turning the original back rooms into a dark corridor, and a fully glazed box would have looked nothing like the Victorian brickwork it joins.
Brick piers and a tiled pitched roof keep the architecture in the same language as the house, while the spans between them are given over entirely to glazing.
